Student-Directed One-Acts Application

Please answer the following questions fully.

 

1)     What play are you interested in directing?

2)     Who owns the rights to this play?

3)     How long is this play?

4)     How many actors are in this play?  Is it good for our program and why?

5)     Why do you NEED to direct this play? Why did you choose this play?

6)     How does the story of this play resonate today?

7)     What is this play about literally and metaphorically?

8)     What is your overall directorial vision of this play? What themes or visual pictures do you think you will use throughout the production?

9)     What are your ideas for your set? What concept do you want to communicate to the audience the moment they see it? Please submit sketches/set design with your application.  (Please note that final set must be a collaborative effort between the directors and designers.)

10)     Would controversy arise from this selection? How would you deal with it?

11)     How was your play choice made? What other plays did you read and how did you come to the decision to pick this play?

12)     What previous directing experience and/or training have you had?

13)     What qualifications are necessary in making a good director? How would you rate yourself and provide an explanation for each of these qualifications? What is your leadership experience?  Give examples of what you would do as leaders every day throughout the rehearsal process.

14)       You will be required to put together a staff. Who will your stage manager be? Who will your costume, set and props coordinator be? How would you coordinate your production process so everyone is on the same page? How would production meetings run?

15)       What would a typical rehearsal look like in your production process?

16)       How will you build unity with your cast?

17)       You will sometimes be allowed to rehearse in the Discourse Lab, but not always. What will your other rehearsal space be?
