Invented words
It is said that Shakespeare invented more than 1,700 words! Some Shakespeare make up from words that existed, but had never been combined – eyeball, bedroom. Some he modified from words – majestic from majesty, lonely from lone. Some he took from foreign words – obscene from Middle French obscene. Sometimes he changed a noun into a verb. This is called a function shift.
